MERRIMACK – Dr. Sara Campbell, a chemistry teacher at Merrimack High School, recently received a scholarship to attend the week-long Science and Engineering Program for Teachers this summer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The program will be held from July 6-11. More than 2,000 middle and high school teachers have been selected for the SEPT program since its inception 36 years ago.

Campbell was chosen by the MIT Alumni Club of New Hampshire for her “commitment to thoughtful, innovative integration of technology into her chemistry classes.”

The club also highlighted Campbell’s ability to quickly adjust to her students’ ever-changing learning styles.

“The program sounds so amazing, with opportunities to learn about the cutting edge research going on at the university in addition to time spent discussing strategies and materials that can be used in my classroom” said Campbell. “As a high school teacher, it can sometimes be hard to keep up with the types of projects being researched by the scientific community and I can’t wait to learn and be able to share that with my students.”

Campbell has taught both College Preparatory Chemistry and Honors Chemistry during her 15 years at Merrimack High School. She also developed the school’s Industrial Chemistry course. In addition, she has served as the assistant coach of the State Champion Science Olympiad team and coached the Granite State Challenge and Quiz Bowl teams.

Prior to her tenure in Merrimack, Campbell was a postdoctoral researcher at the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College and a research and development intern at Emerson & Cuming in Billerica, Mass.

Campbell holds a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the College of William & Mary and a Doctorate in materials chemistry from Dartmouth College.
