Town lacks funding for police body cameras

MILFORD – There is only one thing preventing the Milford Police Department from purchasing body cameras: money.
“We’ve looked into it,” said Police Chief Michael Viola. “It’s a good thing, I’m not against it.”
However, he said the installation of a new Records Management System is the “pressing need” right now. In prior years, police funds were needed to upgrade the department’s radios.
“Financially, it was not the right move,” Viola said of purchasing body cameras.
Looking ahead, he said body cameras could possibly be included in the fiscal year 2027 budget.
Town Administrator Lincoln Daley said the estimated cost is $300,000 for a five-year contract.
“It is a priority, but it’s a matter of funding,” he said.
In May 2024, U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen locked in $1.4 million for body cameras in Merrimack, Alton, Derry, Franklin and Mont Vernon.
