United Way to host Coffee and Causes event Understanding SNAP Benefits for Older Adults
NASHUA – The United Way of Greater Nashua recently announced the rescheduled date for its Coffee and Causes session: Understanding SNAP Benefits for Older Adults will now take place on March 7 from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
The event will be held on the lower level of the United Way building at 20 Broad St.
This free event will feature Heidi Johnson from the New Hampshire Food Bank, who will provide insight on how the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program can help older adults afford nutritious food. Topics covered will include:
-Common myths and facts about SNAP
-How out-of-pocket medical expenses impact eligibility
-Practical strategies for maximizing SNAP benefits
Additionally, Attorney Raymond Burke from New Hampshire Legal Assistance will discuss how their organization supports individuals who believe their SNAP benefits have been incorrectly determined. New Hampshire Food Bank representatives will also be available after the session to answer questions and assist with SNAP applications.
Despite the benefits of SNAP, participation among eligible older adults in New Hampshire remains low. Only about 40 percent of eligible individuals aged 60 and over are enrolled in the program, leaving many without assistance that could improve their nutrition and economic well-being. nhhungersolutions.org
Navigating the application process can be challenging, especially for those unfamiliar with online platforms. The NH EASY website, nheasy.nh.gov, is the state’s online portal for applying to services like SNAP. Assistance from individuals experienced with NH EASY can significantly increase enrollment by helping applicants understand eligibility requirements, complete applications accurately, and submit necessary documentation.
This event is ideal for older adults, caregivers, and community members seeking to better understand and access essential nutrition benefits. Attendees can enjoy complimentary coffee while gaining valuable information.
