United Way of Greater Nashua to host Understanding SNAP Benefits for Older Adults

NASHUA – The United Way of Greater Nashua recently announced its upcoming Coffee and Causes event, Understanding SNAP Benefits for Older Adults on Jan. 10, 2025.
The event will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Nashua Senior Activity Center, 70 Temple St.
This informative session will feature Heidi Johnson, a representative from the New Hampshire Food Bank, who will provide insights on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and how it can assist older adults in accessing nutritious food. Johnson will cover the eligibility requirements for SNAP, including how out-of-pocket medical expenses can help meet income thresholds and will address common myths and misconceptions surrounding the program.
Attorney Raymond Burke of New Hampshire Legal Assistance will speak about the resources available to individuals who may believe their SNAP benefits were miscalculated or who are facing barriers to accessing benefits. New Hampshire Legal Assistance is a statewide nonprofit organization that provides free legal services to low-income individuals, helping them navigate complex issues such as housing, public benefits, and consumer protection. Burke will explain how New Hampshire Legal Assistance can support individuals with SNAP-related concerns, including appealing SNAP determinations and resolving any disputes regarding benefit amounts.
“We are excited to bring this valuable information to our community and help older adults understand how they can access food assistance through SNAP,” said Sara Ceaser, director of Volunteer and Community Engagement at the United Way of Greater Nashua. “This event will provide practical knowledge and resources to ensure that our seniors can receive the support they need to thrive.”
Food insecurity among older adults remains a pressing issue, with many seniors facing challenges in obtaining enough nutritious food. According to the New Hampshire Food Bank, one in 10 older adults in New Hampshire struggles with hunger, and many of them may not be aware of the assistance available to them through SNAP. This event aims to educate seniors and caregivers about their options and connect them to the support they need.
Representatives from the New Hampshire Food Bank will be available after the presentation to answer questions and assist attendees in applying for SNAP benefits.
