Souhegan, Campbell capture state football championships
The Telegraph area has two high school football championships to celebrate Saturday.
Fourth-ranked Souhegan took a 14-0 lead and held on to beat No. 2 Pelham, 14-11 at Pinkerton Academy’s Memorial Field in Derry to win the Division II championship. Sabers QB Michael Fiengo threw for one score and ran for another.
Meanwhile, closer to home in Amherst, No. 1 Campbell of Litchfield blew away No.3 Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough, 48-7 at Souhegan’s Calvetti Field, as twin seniors Scott and Nick Hershberger combined for six touchdowns.
Souhegan avenged its only two loses of the regular season in the postseason, beating Plymouth in the semis and then Pelham, for its second title in the last five seasons. Campbell capped off an undefeated (11-0) campaign with its second crown in the last three years.
