United Way to host Preventing Falls and Fires at Home on Dec. 6

By Staff | Nov 4, 2024

NASHUA – The United Way of Greater Nashua recently announced that the next installment of its Coffee and Causes series, Preventing Falls and Fires at Home, will be held on Dec. 6.

The event will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Dartmouth Health, 2300 Southwood Dr. in Nashua. This event will feature Rebecca Cowser from the New Hampshire Fire Marshal’s Office, sharing the National Fire Protection Association’s Steps to Safety program, an initiative aimed at reducing home fire and fall risks for older adults.

Preventing Falls and Fires at Home will cover critical safety information for older adults, who are twice as likely to be injured or killed in a fire. The session will also address fall prevention–an issue so widespread that fire services now respond to more falls than fires. With one in three older adults experiencing a fall each year, education on home modifications and safety practices is essential.

Key highlights of the presentation include:

-Simple Home Safety Modifications: Recommendations for making living spaces safer, including removing tripping hazards, adding proper lighting, and installing safety aids.

-Fire Prevention Tips: Advice on maintaining working smoke alarms, keeping exits clear, and practicing fire-safe behaviors, all from the NFPA’s Steps to Safety program.

-Balance and Mobility Exercises: Simple routines to support stability and reduce fall risks.

-Interactive Story Sharing: Participants are invited to share personal experiences and ideas for safer living.
