Nashua awarded $1M Brownfields Multipurpose Grant from EPA

NASHUA – The city was recently chosen to receive a $1 million Brownfields Multipurpose Grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
This funding will play a pivotal role in the ongoing efforts to remediate and revitalize Brownfields sites in downtown Nashua, furthering the city’s commitment to fostering economic growth and sustainable development.
Brownfields are properties where the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of petroleum or hazardous substances. These sites are often abandoned, vacant or under-used industrial or commercial properties. The grant will allow Nashua to address these challenges head-on, building on the successes of past Brownfields funding received by the city and the broader region.
“This funding will allow Nashua to revitalize former industrial areas, transforming them into thriving community assets that promote economic growth, enhance public health and improve the quality of life for Nashua residents,” said Community Development Director Matthew Sullivan.
The $1 million grant will be used to conduct environmental site assessments, develop cleanup plans, and implement remediation activities on key Brownfields sites in Downtown Nashua. These efforts will not only mitigate environmental hazards but also pave the way for new development projects that can stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and enhance the community’s overall well-being.
“The EPA’s Brownfields Program has been funding necessary assessment and cleanup in the city of Nashua since 2007,” said Deb Chisholm, the city’s sustainability manager. “This new funding will allow us to continue transforming Nashua’s former industrial properties into part of the city’s vibrant downtown.”
Nashua’s success in securing this grant is a testament to the city’s proactive approach and dedication to environmental stewardship and economic development. The city’s previous Brownfields initiatives have already seen positive outcomes, and this new funding promises to build upon those achievements.
