NASHUA – On May 28, the Friends of the Nashua Public Library were presented the Gate City Light Award by Mayor James Donchess and the Volunteer Recognition Committee.

This award honors an organization and its volunteers for their dedication to community service, caring, and making significant contributions to the people of Nashua. This year, the Friends of the Nashua Public Library received the award for their outstanding support of the library through fundraising, advocacy, and volunteer work, which greatly enhances the library’s programs and services. In the past year alone, the Friends of the Nashua Public Library raised more than $50,000, which funded numerous library programs, including summer reading initiatives, cultural events, and technology upgrades.

Marguerite’s Place was the runner-up for the award. Marguerite’s Place is renowned for its comprehensive support services for women and children, including transitional housing, educational programs and childcare. During the past year, Marguerite’s Place provided housing for 30 families and delivered more than 2,000 hours of educational programming, significantly helping families achieve self-sufficiency and stability. Their childcare services support over 50 children annually, ensuring that parents can pursue education and employment opportunities.

The Unsung Hero Award was given to Gate City Bike Co-op, recognizing their invaluable work in providing bicycles and repair services to those in need. The Co-op promotes sustainable transportation and ensures that individuals have access to reliable, eco-friendly transportation options. In the last year, Gate City Bike Co-op refurbished and distributed more than 200 bicycles and hosted 75 free repair clinics, making a significant impact on the community by enhancing mobility and supporting environmental sustainability.

Nominations for these awards are traditionally collected from the community during April, Global Volunteer Month. This year, more than 50 nominations were submitted, reflecting the community’s recognition of the hard work and dedication of these organizations.
