NASHUA – For the first time in its 90-year history, the total enrollment at Rivier University has exploded with nearly 300 new students arriving on campus this past September.

Rivier President Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM said there were 2,477 full-time students enrolled at the university during the fall 2022 semester. One year later, that figure swelled to 2,722 full-time students.

The enrollment figure for fall 2023 represents an increase of 12 percent. In contrast, the student population typically climbs by “three to four percent” each year.

Sister Paula said Rivier has attracted students from as far away as Florida, Alaska and India, adding that international students are now returning to the U.S. for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.

She also said that during the past decade, Rivier has continued to invest in its academic facilities with robust programs in computer science, computer information systems and nursing.

“Nursing remains one of our largest majors,” she said, adding that Rivier is one of only two schools in New Hampshire to offer doctoral programs in counseling.

Sister Paula said she and her administrative team anticipated the drastic climb in enrollment, most of whom are freshmen.

“We’re always preparing for increased enrollment,” she said.

In addition, the enrollment increase was enough to warrant the construction of the $15 million Rivier Village, which is slated to open on Jan. 3, 2024.

In addition to designated parking, Rivier Village will consist of two apartment-style buildings capable of housing 75 juniors and seniors.

The buildings will be located across the street from the university at the corner of Clement and Main streets.

Each unit will feature four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full kitchen as well as a washer and dryer. Because the units are considered apartments, meal plans will not be required for students living in Rivier Village.

Sister Paula said students choose to live on campus given that Nashua’s apartment vacancy rate is less than one percent and the average monthly rent is $1,900.

“You want to stay [on campus] for the student experience,” said Sister Paula.

Despite the record enrollment, Sister Paula gave her assurance that class sizes will not be impacted.

“We’re able to open additional [course] sections,” she said.
