NASHUA – Running for a second term on the Board of Education, incumbent member Sharon Giglio highlighted the need for additional staff in the Nashua School District, a task she would oversee if re-elected.
As chairwoman of the board’s Human Resources Committee, Giglio said adequate staffing has been a problem throughout the district since the COVID-19 pandemic.
She explained what must be done to keep current staff members.
“To retain our exemplary staff we need to make sure to keep our pay scale and benefits as good as or better than our surrounding districts,” said Giglio.
She also spoke about the redistricting process that began in March of this year.
“It needs to be studied, taking into account our current schools, the needs of the students at each school and all stakeholders,” said Giglio.
Because redistricting must be done in such a meticulous manner, Giglio said she recommended postponing it for one year. This action also allowed Mount Pleasant Elementary School to remain open.
In addition, Giglio is a member of the Joint Special School Building Committee. Her work on that committee has resulted in school security enhancements, renovating two middle schools and two elementary schools as well as the constriction of the new McCarthy Middle School.
Following a successful campaign in 2019, Giglio said she is much more confident going into November.
“I feel more tuned into the needs of our students and staff,” she said. “I pledge to be honest, ethical, do as much research as necessary and vote for plans that will benefit the school community. I honestly believe I have made a difference while on the Board of Education.”
Following her work as a paraprofessional at New Searles Elementary School in the early-1990s, Giglio went on to serve as the librarian at Birch Hill Elementary School, Mount Pleasant Elementary School and Ledge Street Elementary School.
A Nashua resident of nearly 40 years, Giglio holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Studies from the University of Rhode Island.
