Salem man charged with setting Hudson church on fire
HUDSON – Matthew Jackson, 29, of Salem, is accused of setting the First Baptist Church of Hudson on fire and then reporting it to authorities.
According to police, Jackson flagged down officers near the corner of Central Street and Greeley Street at 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 26.
While conducting an on-scene investigation, officers determined that Jackson was responsible for starting the blaze and “causing extensive fire damage.”
The investigation also suggested that Jackson crashed his car into the side of the church. In addition, he is accused of using a fire extinguisher in an attempt to break into the 7-Eleven located next to the church.
Jackson has since been charged with arson, burglary, criminal mischief, misdemeanor conduct after an accident and resisting arrest.
Under state law, if convicted, Jackson could face up to 39 years in prison and up to $1,200 in fines.
The investigation remains ongoing.
