NASHUA – Robert Romano, 34, of Nashua, is being held without bail after he allegedly tried to steal a vehicle with a 5-year-old girl in the back seat on Aug. 30.

According to police, a woman had pulled up to a downtown Walgreens to return a Redbox movie. The vehicle was left unlocked with the engine running. What the woman saw when she turned around was a parent’s worst nightmare. Romano had reportedly gotten into the driver’s seat and began driving in reverse — with the woman’s daughter still in the back seat.

Fortunately, police said the woman was able to get Romano out of the car before he had a chance to get away. She and her daughter were not harmed.

Romano is now charged with attempted theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, breach of bail and driving after revocation or suspension. Under state law, if convicted, Romano could face up to 22 years in prison and up to $5,000 in fines.
