The Boston Bruins historic season came to stunning, crushing end on Sunday night as the Florida Panthers won Game 7 of their first round Stanley Cup playoff series, 4-3, on a Carter Verhaeghe goal at 8:34 of sudden death overtime.
The Bruins, who won the Presidents Cup with the most wins and points ever in a NHL regular season, rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead on David Pastrnak’s goal at 4:11 of the third period. However, the Panthers tied it with an extra attacker on the ice with just a minute to go in regulation on a Brandon Montour goal to send the game to overtime.
Boston had a 3-1 series lead but lost in overtime on Wednesday night at TD Garden and the Panthers evened the series with a win on Friday night in Sunrise, Fla. in Game 6.
After the game, Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron hugged a few of his teammates and waved good-bye to the TD Garden crowd as he left the ice, as there will certainly be speculation in the coming days that he has played his last game.
