Nashua schools closed Monday and Tuesday due to staff absences

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Jan 7, 2022

NASHUA — Nashua public school students will experience even more of an extended weekend than they received with Friday’s snow day.

Interim Superintendent of Schools Garth J. McKinney announced via twitter on Friday that there will be no school Monday and Tuesday “because of the current and anticipated high number of staff absences.” Those absences, McKinney said, reached as high as 200 staffers on Thursday, “many COVID-19 related.”

The two days will be treated as snow days, and with the addition of Friday’s snow day, the last day of school has been pushed back now to Monday, June 20.

“The well being of our school communities remains our greatest priority,” McKinney said in his posted letter to NSD families and staff. “We are alarmed with the high number of staff absences across our schools these last few days. … We are looking for these additional days to make a difference in absenteeism, and for our students and staff to benefit from the added time home.”

McKinney said he would provide an update early next week.

Also, sources said scheduled athletic events are still on for Monday, for now. That includes, among other events, North vs. Bishop Guertin boys and girls basketball and South vs. Windham boys and girls basketball, plus North-Souhegan vs. Windham boys hockey at Conway Arena.

Those allowed to attend those events should check the Nashua North and South athletic websites the next couple of days for any changes.
