Last day of school tentatively June 25

By Hannah LaClaire - Staff Writer | Apr 5, 2018

NASHUA – The Nashua Teachers’ Union announced Wednesday that members will not vote on the end-of-year proposal approved by the Board of Education last week.

In the proposal, which was announced and voted for in a survey that went out prior to the last board meeting, the last day for students would be June 15, with an additional week of professional development and safety training for teachers and staff from June 18-22.

The BOE approved this schedule 5-3, and sent it to the NTU’s four bargaining units for final approval.

However, the union will not vote on the issue, Adam Marcoux, union president said, because the proposal would cause some hourly employees to lose pay, which was allegedly not communicated when the plan was

developed.

“Our understanding was that the week of June 18 included all of the staff in the district for the entire week, not just some of us,” Marcoux said in a press release.

If voted on, the proposal would have needed approval from all four units, but at least one of the units would have lost up to four days worth of pay.

“I will not ask any of the members of the NTU to work fewer days and lose out on pay they are expecting to receive,” he said.

“We would be more than willing to consider a proposal that is fair and equitable for all of our members,” Deb Howes, NTU vice president said.

By choosing not to vote on the issue, the current last day of school is June 25, due to at least eight inclement weather days.

In January, the BOE voted to add a total of 14 minutes to the school day, with seven in the morning and seven in the afternoon in an effort to make up for three of the lost days

and share the burden equally among the 17 schools.

That proposal did not pass the four bargaining units, and several more days have been missed due to weather since.

There is no word yet on if or when the BOE and the NTU might negotiate another option for the last day of school.

Superintendent Jahmal Mosley was not available for comment due to previously scheduled meetings.
