Fight between brothers escalates quickly

Knife and squirtgun no match for pistol

By Damien Fisher - Staff Writer | Jul 1, 2017

NASHUA – It started before the squirtgun. Police say a fight between brothers went from trading punches, to a smashed squirtgun, a tossed collage, then a butcher knife and finally a pistol, all in short order Thursday night, resulting in several charges lodged against Everett Rice, 25.

Rice allegedly got into a pair of fistfights Thursday night after coming home from the Nashua Silver Knights game. The first fight took place in the kitchen at the 18 Paxton Terrace apartment Rice shared with his brothers, Travis and Justin Rice.

Everett Rice also allegedly got into a fight with his friend, Ryan Moody, after the game. Moody told police he didn’t understand why the fights started, but he quickly lost his glasses that he needs to see. Moody told police that he did not see the rest of the altercation because his glasses were smashed.

Travis Rice went to get Justin Rice, 27, when the fight between Moody and Everett Rice broke out, according to the police report. Justin Rice was sleeping when Travis, Everett and Moody got back to the home after the baseball game. Travis Rice then stayed in the bathroom for most of the rest of the altercation, according to police.

Justin and Everett initially traded punches, but Justin told police he tried to walk away from the fight. That’s when Everett allegedly grabbed a squirtgun and broke it against his brother’s back. After a small altercation, Justin said he tried to walk away, then Everett grabbed his older brother from behind, causing a scratch to his face, according to police documents. More punches followed, and Justin told police he again tried to walk away. As he was walking away, Everett threw a picture collage at him, he told police.

The two brothers then started exchanging threats when Everett went into the kitchen and came out with a butcher knife, advancing on his older brother, according to the police report.

Justin left the apartment, and got a Smith & Wesson pistol from the trunk of his car and came back into the house, the report says. When Everett went at his brother a second time with the knife, Justin drew the pistol and pointed it at Everett.

Everett turned and ran at the sight of the gun, and Justin then called police. Justin told officer he had no intention of shooting his brother and that he did not load a round into the gun’s chamber.

Everett declined to make a statement to officers. He is charged with felonies for criminal threatening, domestic violence, as well as misdemeanors for simple assault and domestic violence. He is currently free on $10,000 surety bail and ordered to stay 300 feet away from his brother. Court records show that Everett Rice will stay with his mother at a different address.

He is due back in court on July 25 for a probable cause hearing.
