Strong Sunday afternoon storms wreak havoc in Greater Nashua

A large segment of Nashua’s southwest quadrant was left without power and street closures were necessary due to downed trees and power lines, while high winds from the same line of storms took down a large tent and caused several injuries at the “Big Tent” revival in New Ipswich Sunday afternoon.
The storms affected most all of Greater Nashua to some degree, with the most common reports involving trees and large branches, in some cases taking down power lines, such as occurred on West Hollis Street at Skyline Drive in Nashua.
Trees also blocked roads in Pelham and parts of Hollis, according to reports. As of 5 p.m., Hollis had the highest percentage of power outages with roughly 20 percent of customers having lost power, according to Eversource.
The utility reported roughly 1,000 outages in Nashua, which has about 43,000 Eversource customers.
Just up the road from the West Hollis Street incident, which forced police to close the road for a time and send traffic on a circuitous route through Westgate Village, up Main Dunstable Road to Gilson Road, onto Countryside Drive and back onto West Hollis, a large tree was also felled in River Pines mobile home park, blocking River Pines Boulevard.
Residents of River Pines, as well as Rodgers Mobile Home park across from the city landfill, milled about in the streets once the downpours stopped.
Several residents said one of the storms appeared to spawn a microburst, a short-lived burst of wind that hits the ground then spreads horizontally, with enough power to take down trees and in extreme cases, cause tornado-like structural damage.
In New Ipswich, at least six people were taken to area hospitals with varying types of injuries when a giant tent collapsed in high winds, according to WMUR-TV.
Other individuals were being treated on the scene, the station reported.
Meanwhile, the Keene Sentinel reported in a Website post that Torben Sondergaard, the leader of the “The Last Reformation” revival, said participants “were just wrapping up the 10-day event when a strong wind came through, causing the tent to cave in.”
