The driver, a Pelham man whose identity police didn't release, was found on the ground outside the car and transported to a local hospital. He is likely to face charges, police said.

PELHAM – Officers, firefighters and ambulance personnel arrived at the scene of a single-car crash Saturday evening to find the car, a 2005 Mercedes, engulfed in flames, and bystanders pointing to a seriously injured man lying nearby.

Firefighters attacked the flames while medical personnel tended to the driver, who police said was alone in the car. They said he is a 32-year-old Pelham resident, but they are withholding his name for the time being due to the investigation.

Around 8 p.m., multiple people called 911 reporting a car struck a tree on Spring Street, in the southern part of town just north of the Dracut, Massachusetts town line, and had burst into flames, police said.

Police described the driver as “uncooperative,” and said officers “observed indicators of impairment during the interaction” with him.

They said speed and alcohol impairment appear to be contributing factors, and that criminal charges are anticipated.

The man was transported to Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Massachusetts, police said. His condition wasn’t available as of Sunday night.
