AG ends day-to-day supervision of County Attorney Conlon’s office, outlines steps for continued progress

By Dean Shalhoup - Senior Staff Reporter | Jun 8, 2020

CONCORD – Attorney General Gordon MacDonald announced Monday afternoon he is terminating his office’s day-to-day oversight of the office of Hillsborough County Attorney Michael Conlon, a process that began in September after a series of “systemic issues” surfaced regarding the “prosecutorial functions” of the office.

While praising Conlon and his staff of assistant county attorneys for “your cooperation and assistance” over the 10-month period, MacDonald laid out numerous suggestions and recommendations he said he would like Conlon to implement, including additional training for assistant county attorneys, the implementation of a plea-agreement review system and the development of policies and procedures, with focus on case intake and assignment procedures.

MacDonald also said he “strongly encourages” Conlon’s “ongoing efforts to address staffing shortages by filling vacancies as quickly as possible.”
