(Courtesy of Nashua Historical Society) This late 19th-century photo, part of the Nashua Historical Society's Frank Ingalls Collection, shows a military training drill underway around the time that career military officer Gen. Elbert Wheeler was volunteering his time to conduct the training sessions. The uniformed cadets were drilled for 40 minutes per week, in musketry, military movement, manliness and dignity of carriage, mental discipline and exercise. In 1888 the Superintendent of Schools recommended the program be made permanent under a paid instructor.
