Readers who have called the Nashua area home long enough probably remember this landmark restaurant and function hall, a favorite destination not only for local folks but for the many ‘from away’ who knew the long drive was well worth it. Indeed, the White Gobbler advertised ‘food at its best,’ according to the panels beneath the iconic sign topped with a rendition of, well, a white gobbler. Its owners also emphasized its ‘businessmen’s lunches,’ and another panel reminds diners the place was 'open year round,' which is usually seen on signs along coastal and vacation areas. Long time locals will also recall that the White Gobbler, which was run by a well-liked woman named Edith Vinal, once sat in this rural setting that, today, is anything but rural. The Gobbler was around from the 1940s through the 50s, when it became Green Ridge Turkey Farm. It’s hard to believe now, but the Gobbler, and Green Ridge, were at the corner of Daniel Webster Highway and Spit Brook Road – where Barnes & Noble and a wide variety of stores large and small are sprawled over the entire area.
