Today this building houses the downtown Nashua branch of Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, but when this photo was taken in the early 1950s, it was the home of the First Universalist Church, which was still several years away from its merger, with the First Unitarian Church, which occurred in 1957. The white sign at center, partially obscured by the late 1940s model step-van and early 1950s model pickup truck announces the opening of ‘Santa’s Workshop,’ giving us an idea of the time of year. Once the congregation joined the Unitarian folks at their Canal Street location, this building housed various shops and stores, some of them displaced by the big fire across Main Street in the early 60s. One of those was the Philip Morris store.
