From The Telegraph Files
A rather clever way to advertise for an insurance company is illustrated in this float created for Nashua's 1953 Centennial celebration parade, one of the biggest in Nashua's history. It advertises Blue Cross insurance, back when such plans probably cost a whole lot less than now. The saying on the "roof" of the shoe is "The old woman knew what to do, she joined Blue Cross, have you?" The photo was taken by Lucille Conway's grandfather, Alfred Gould, who was standing near the corner of Main and East Hollis streets. Visible behind the shoe is Shapiro's Drug Store, which is where 7-Star pizza is today. The building next door is 4 West Hollis St., then the home of the Big 4 Tire Company, and today the location of Chicken and Chips. (Courtesy of Lucille Conway)
