Greater Souhegan Flashback
Amherst’s most famous son, Horace Greeley, was born to a poor couple in this house near what is now the Joe English conservation area. He went to New York to seek his fortune and became editor of the New York Tribune. He was a candidate for president in 1872, lost in a landslide and died three weeks later. Today, he is probably best known for his editorial urging young men to go west and seek their fortune.
