Today in History for July 29

By Staff | Jul 29, 2020

** FILE ** This June 3, 1992 file photo shows convicted Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk, center, laughing in Israel's Supreme Court in Jerusalem, at the start of an appeal hearing. Demjanjuk, a former camp guard has been fighting deportation from the U.S. for three decades. Prosecutors initially claimed he was the Treblinka camp guard "Ivan the Terrible." Officials later concluded he was not, but a judge ruled in 2002 that documents from World War II prove Demjanjuk was a Nazi guard at various camps. Demjanjuk contends that he served in the Soviet Army and was captured by Germany in 1942 and became a prisoner of war. (AP Photo/Nati Harnik, File)
