The beauty of yes is that it can be steered. As a former student of the theater, I like to follow the cardinal rule of improvisation, which is encapsulated in the two little words “yes, and …” For many, “yes, and …” is more than an improvisational rule; it’s a lifestyle. The yes is your agreement to and acceptance of whatever life brings. The “and” is your personal stamp. That’s the proof that you were here and you made life go in a particular direction. Putting your “and” into the world makes you vulnerable because there’s always a risk that what you add is going to be strange, weird and somehow unacceptable. That is precisely what makes “and” an important add-on and a chance to exert your bravery. Life in an “agree and steer” mode is far more interesting, smooth and expansive than a life in “no” mode.
