Brown is Artist of the Month

By Staff | Oct 10, 2019

NASHUA – Mary Ellen Brown is a pastel artist who will be showing at the ArtHub gallery as the Artist of the Month in November.

Her reception will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. om Nov. 9.

Now living in Southern New Hampshire, Brown studied fine art and digital photography at Salem State College, supplementing with classes at Montserrat College of Art.

An award-winning artist, she maintains a studio in Hudson.

Having worked in oils, pastels, graphite, watercolor and digital photography, her focus is now centered on pastel painting, preferring a highly detailed realism as seen in her still life, florals and seascapes. The works of the old Dutch masters as well as the simple yet stunning beauty of grapes, flowers or a silver pitcher inspire her.

“My aim is to share my joy in and appreciation of the subject matter, by focusing the viewer on the details. Using sanded pastel papers allows me to build layers, helping to develop depth, shape, color, light and shadows.”

In-between studio time and time spent showing in many exhibitions and galleries over the past years, Brown enjoys teaching the skills and sharing the joy of painting. She believes that the love of painting was a God-given gift to be shared with others and loves to see others succeed in their artistic endeavors under her teaching.

Brown is a member of the Pastel Guild of Europe, Pastel Society of America, Pastel Society of New Hampshire and a juried artist member of North Shore Arts Association, Gloucester, Massachusetts.
