Nashua middle school field hockey opens strong

Nashua middle school squad off to 3-2 start

The Nashua Middle School Field Hockey team, a 53-player roster with girls from Elm Street, Pennichuck, Fairgrounds and Nashua Catholic, has jumped out to a 3-2 record after its first five games.

The team began the season with a win against Milford Middle School 2-1. The duo of Julia Gagnon and Kirsten McIntire combined for both goals.

Nashua lost the next two games to two tough club teams from Chelmsford (Mass.), 1-0 , and Andover 2-0. Theresa Ellison, Emma Tomasetti, Josephine Coehlo, Kayleigh Eckinrode, Liz Harrington, Liv Hlebichuck, Gabby Laferriere, Mikayla Breslin, Lauren Schalk and goalie Courtney Tello all played well defensively.

Nashua edged Southside of Manchester, 1-0, as Campbell Haller scored off a pass from Katherine Tello.

Also playing well for Nashua were Paige Callahan, Britney Pearson, Hannah Martin, Madison Sewade, Stella Liakakos, Rachel Reardon, Emma Pucillo, Michaela Puleo, Erin Sewell, Erica Brennan and Molly Caron. Tello was again outstanding in net with eight saves.

Nashua’s best game came in a 4-1 win over Manchester’s McLaughlin Middle School. Kirsten McIntire fed Abbey Rowe for the first goal, and Rowe connected on another goal to give Nashua a 2-1 lead. Paula Durant and Lindsay Hult also scored for the locals.

Kylie Whitman, Julia Cote, Brooke Yabroudy, Taylor Douzanis, Amy Marison, Kiley O’Brien, Lauren Shaw, Elinor Addonizio and Taylor Cote all played well as Tello had seven saves.

Nashua Middle School field hockey will play Amherst Middle School, Woodbury, Hillside, Chelmsford and Milford in upcoming games.

SOCCER SHOOT

Six locals to compete in Elks State event

Six Greater Nashua Elks Soccer Shoot champions will compete in the New Hampshire Elks Soccer Shoot Championship on Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Plymouth Elks Soccer Field in Holderness.

Locals making the trip will be: 12-year old Joey Morse, U-14 Boys Grid champion; 10-year-old Connor Dowling, U12 Boys Grid champion; 7-year-old Alex Noel, U8 Boys 5-Goal champion; 13-year-old Hannah Swain, U14 Girls Grid champion; 10-year-old Carly Morse, U12 Girls Grid Goal champion and nine-year old Katelyn Krisak, U10 Girls 5-Goal Champion.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the Shootout will begins at 10.

The U8 and the U10 champions will compete in the Five Goal Soccer Shoot with the each kicking 15 shots for score. The U8’s will kick from a distance of 15 feet and the U10’s from 18 feet with the five goals ranging from 48 inches wide down to 17 inches wide.

The U12 and the U14 champions will kick from 36 feet at a grid goal with assorted size openings that will be attached to the front of a regulation 24-foot soccer goal. Contestants will have 15 kicks for score.

The state U8, U10, U12 and U14 winners advance to the Area One Regional Soccer Shoot competition in Maine Nov. 7-9.

Nashua Elks

Eighth grade:
Londonderry 12, Crusaders 6

The Eighth Grade Elks Crusaders dropped a tough 12-6 decision to the Londonderry Wildcats, who jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter and found the end zone again late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

The Nashua defense was led by Justin Arnesen and Jaylan Pacheco, each with eight tackles, and Mark Lagasse (fumble recovery and five tackles). The Crusaders also received multiple tackle performances from Casey McNally (pass defense), Andrew Penkala, Josh McElligott (pass defense), Tanner Plourde, Quincy Cotto (sack), Brendon Frost, and Braden McDonnell.

Also playing well on defense were Tommy Cullerton, Anthony Dowd, Adam Paquette, and Nathanael Tejeda.

Nashua’s only touchdown came on a 45-yard toss from Penkala to Alex Fortier. Penkala also and ran the ball 12 times (five first downs) and completed two additional passes.

Plourde (eight carries), McNally (three runs and one reception), and Pacheco (two rushes and one reception) also played well. The Nashua line received big efforts from Branden Martin, Warren Curtis, Tim Santerre, Arnesen, McElligott, and McDonnell. Receivers Jacob Babb and Cole Desmond also blocked well.

Baseball/Softball

John Roper pitching lessons

The John Roper Pitching School, run by the former Major Leaguer and Nashua Pride hurler begins in November, consisting of private and semi-private pitching lessons.

Pitching classes include pitchers fielding practice, pick off moves, covering bunts etc. There is a maximum of 10 students per class.

N.H. Grizzlies training

The New Hampshire Grizzlies will be offering training for baseball players at their private facility in southern New Hampshire from Oct. 6 to Feb. 23.

All training will be done by managers/coaches of the NH Grizzlies EBL Teams. Each has many years of training high school/collegiate /MLB players; four are former Grizzlies.

Sessions will cover skills that are age appropriate.

The times are Mondays 6-7:15 p.m.for players age 12 and under, and Mondays 7:30-8:45 p.m. for players 13 and above.

The cost is $100 per month. Pre-registration with payment for each month will be required.

NH Grizzlies openings

The New Hampshire Grizzlies U14 baseball team has a few openings left for the 2015 season.

This is a full year program with winter workouts starting in October. Managers are not parents and all practices are at the team’s private indoor facility.

Four Grizzlie alums were either drafted or have played for Major League teams. Over 100 members have played on collegiate teams at all three divisions, some with scholarships.

Academy tryouts

The Nashua Baseball Academy is holding tryouts on Sunday at 2 p.m. to fill out rosters as openings exist on all teams ages 10 through 19. The age determination date is May 1, 2015.

Features of the program include small roster sizes to maximize playing time, camps and clinics specific to positional play, fall hitting program, winter workouts twice a week, conditioning program, a spring and summer season and a travel tournament.

Nighthawks tryouts

The Nashua Nighthawks travel basketball program is holding its annual tryouts for its boys and girls teams.

The tryouts will be held on Saturday October 25 at Girls, Inc. in

Nashua. The cost to tryout is $20 per player (or $25 per family). Every player must attend one of the following sessions to be eligible to play.

The sessions are as follows: 8 a.m., seventh grade boys; 9:30 a.m., fourth grade boys; 10:30 a.m., fifth grade boys; 12 p.m., sixth grade boys; 1:30 p.m., eighth grade boys; 3 p.m. four and fifth grade girls; 4 p.m., sixth grade girls; 5:30 p.m., seventh grade girls; 7 p.m., eighth grade girls.

Nighthawks coaching opening

The Nashua Nighthawks travel basketball program is seeking a qualified coach for its girl’s 4/5th grade team.

Gymnastics

UNH kids program Oct. 11

The University of New Hampshire gymnastics program announces Kids’ Night Out on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 6-10 p.m. at the UNH Field House.

Children age 3 to eighth grade are invited for a night of gymnastics, games and pizza under the supervision of the UNH gymnastics team. Kids’ Night Out, which is a fundraiser for the UNH gymnastics program, costs $25 per child and $20 for additional children from the same family.
