Alvirne football hammers Manchester West

By Andrew Sylvia - For The Telegraph | Oct 12, 2019

MANCHESTER – If this was a trap game, someone forgot to spring the trap.

While the standings would indicate that the Alvirne Broncos came into Friday’s contest as a clearly superior team, they did not take anything for granted, thoroughly defeating Manchester West, 35-0.

Alvirne’s Alex Giuffrida capped off a seven-play, 66-yard opening drive with an 11-yard touchdown run to put up the Broncos first score. Kyle Gora’s 22-yard throw to Kyle Boucher provided the second.

Gora blocked a punt deep in West territory with just under three minutes before the half, with teammate Donald Buchanan recovering the ball for Alvirne’s third score, with the other two touchdowns coming from goal line runs from Gora and Grady Hudson in the second half.

While the scoreboard alone indicated Alvirne’s clear advantage in skill, the Broncos got a bit of luck too between the blocked punt and a bobbled reception by Ayvion Prak during the first drive that was deftly retained despite what seemed to be an almost certain drop.

That catch brought the Broncos into the red zone and was arguably the most crucial play in that opening scoring drive. One can argue whether Alvirne might have eventually recovered the momentum if that ball had not been caught, but one thing is certain: the fact that it was a catch certainly helped keep the momentum going in that moment.

“It was key, that catch kept the drive alive and kept the momentum going,” said Alvirne coach Tarek Rothe. “(Prak) loves to make spectacular catches and it really helped keep us in the right mindset.”

Gora ended the night 6 for 9 through the air for 78 yards, with an one-handed interception late in the second half by West’s Xavier Burpee to accompany Gora’s earlier touchdown throw.

Giuffrida led the Broncos on the ground with 62 yards on six carries. On defense, 19 different Broncos recorded a tackle, led by Morgan

Williams’ three.

West finished the contest with just one passing attempt, with Burpee taking the ball on 23 of the Blue Knights 39 plays from scrimmage. He’d end up with 82 of West’s 104 offensive yards on the night.

Brandon Lloyd led West with five tackles.

The Broncos climb to 5-1, just a one-point loss away from a perfect record. Although next week holds a John Stark team that has not scored a touchdown since Sept. 6, Rothe knows his squad has work to do with powerhouses Milford and Hollis-Brookline looming to complete the regular season.

“We have work to do. Division II is filled with juggernauts and we’re just going to face what’s in front of us,” he said. “We got better today and we just have to keep on taking one step forward.”
