Assault, false imprisonment among grand jury charges

By Dean Shalhoup - Senior Staff Writer | May 31, 2019

NASHUA – Frederick Berard, the 52-year-old man accused of identifying himself as a narcotics detective and “creeping out” women at a downtown restaurant in March, has been indicted on charges that include forgery and failure to register as a sex offender.

The grand jury for the May term of Hillsborough County Superior Court-South handed up four indictments against Berard, including two counts of false personation, and one count each of forgery and duty to report, all felonies.

Berard, who lists no fixed address, is among numerous suspects the grand jury indicted on a variety of alleged offenses. An indictment is not proof of guilt, but represents the Grand Jury’s determination that enough evidence exists for prosecutors to move the case forward.

Berard is accused of forging a $500 check drawn on another person’s account, failing to file sex-offender registration information with police and telling restaurant patrons he was a narcotics officer “currently conducting surveillance on a person in the restaurant” and telling a woman he was a police officer and told her to call him the next morning so he could help her fix her car, all on March 15 in Nashua.
