Boston Cannons, MLL to play short season in Annapolis

By Staff and wire reports - | Jul 3, 2020

Add Major League Lacrosse and the Boston Cannons to the list of pro sports teams and leagues making their return this summer.

But only in the blink of an eye.

Major League Lacrosse announced Thursday that the 2020 season will be played in Annapolis, Md. beginning July 16 with a two-day training camp, with the regular season kicking off July 18.

The week-long season will conclude with a final-four playoff the weekend of July 25-26. The city of Annapolis will play host to all six MLL teams, with the entirety of the 2020 season broadcast national on the ESPN family of networks.

The games are being played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, home to the Chesapeake Bayhawks, who are the reigning MLL Champions. The Cannons will play each of the league’s other five teams one time over the course of the first week of the 10-day event, with the potential to play in the four-team semifinal over the July 25-26 weekend.

The season will mark the 20th anniversary season for both the Boston Cannons and for Major League Lacrosse.

“The Boston Cannons organization is excited to get on the field for our 20th anniversary season,” said Cannons President Ian Frenette. “While we’re disappointed that we are not able to play in front of our hometown fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium, we’re thrilled to be able to play in 2020, during this unprecedented time.”

Under the guidance of a team of medical professionals, MLL has developed a comprehensive strategy to ensure the health and safety of all players, staff and personnel on-site for the entirety of the 2020 season. The league has an established COVID Safety Protocol Officer, who will oversee to the adherence and execution of the safety plan.
