CURRENT SWING: Catcher does it again for Silver Knights

NASHUA – Here’s what may be the deal with the 2025 Nashua Silver Knights:

Right now, they seem to have plenty of live arms to help them win. How much they win may depend on their bats.

“That’s been the big one, quite honestly,” Silver Knights manager Nick Guarino said after the team scored four in the eighth to sting the New Britain Bees 7-3 before a lively Holman Stadium Father’s Day crowd of 1,926. “We were striking out a lot more on the road this week, quite honestly. A couple of games with 10, 11 strikeouts is not going to do it. We had a hitters meeting (Saturday) before the game.”

And since then the Knights have plated 17 runs in 48 hours to even their record at 8-8 following a tough four-game losing streak on the road.Trailing 2-0 yesterday, they got bases loaded walks to River Hart and Joe Current to tie the game. They got a sac fly off the bat of Jack Balcer in the seventh to take a 3-2 lead.

But then they got a hit they needed, a double off the bat of Current in the bottom of the eighth over the head of New Britan left fielder Brennan Staubley to double in two runs. Current, remember, beat the Bees (7-10) with not one but two homers exactly two weeks ago here.

“He’s coming in, he’s doing his job,” Guarino said. “We have three catchers and they all played today.”

The other two were at other positions, Will Burns at first and James Benestad at DH. “They’re all swinging that bat really well,” Guarino said. “It’s nice to have three guys who can do the job behind the plate and also give us good Abs.”

“Just sticking to the process, that’s the main thing,” Current said. “I saw the ball go over his head, and at first I thought it was a sac fly. In a regular case I’m happy I did my job there. This was extra.”

Two more runs came in the inning off a throwing error home by NB third baseman Easton Masse fielding a swinging bunt by the Knights’ Cole Patterson.

But the damage was done, and it made a winner out of local product (BG) Brandon Metivier, who battled in the top of the eighth in his one inning of relief but gave up an RBI single to, ironically, Staubley. Reliever Scott Longo walked two but pitched a scoreless ninth.

Earlier in the game, starter Ethan Hunt gave up two runs on three hits that put Nashua in a second-inning 2-0 hole. No matter, this team seems to be able to come back, especially at home. Witness what they did in the eighth after the game was tied.

“Huge,” Current said. “We were down in the dumps a little bit after that inning. Metivier gave it his all, but from that point on you’ve got to say enough’s enough and put a couple of at-bats together and we did.”

“We’ve been breaking it into three different games,” Guarino said. “So (Saturday) the theme was you win the first three, you win the second three and you win the next three. Today we tied the first three, tied the second three, and then we opened it up and won the last third of the game. That’s going to help you win baseball games.”

This is what the team needed upon returning to Holman, and Guarino feels that Sunday’s win was extra important.

“This game today was probably bigger than the one (Saturday),” he said. “We were on a losing streak going in yesterday … It was good to be able to win yesterday and add another win on. Now with a winning streak you’ve got some momentum going into the off day (today) and then Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.”

NOTES

Nashua and the league are off today, and as Guarino said, there are home games Tuesday vs. Westfield, Wednesday vs. Norwich and Thursday vs. Worcester…

Dads received Father’s Day neckties with a Silver Knights logo at the bottom, and one of more popular events of the season took place when after the game fans young and old were allowed to go on the field and play catch, and many did exactly that.
