J.C. Jackson’s second go-round with the New England Patriots wasn’t nearly as good as the first, and thus the team released the veteran cornerback on Friday.

The move was expected, as Jackson, who had some disciplinary issues after being reacquired in a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers around mid-season, would have counted $14 million against the salary cap. The savings gives the Patriots an estimated $100 million of cap space going into the free agent signing period in a couple of weeks.

Jackson spent his first four seasons with the Patriots after being signed in 2018 as a rookie free agent out of Maryland. His 25 interceptions during that time tied Laster Hayes and Everson Walls for the most interceptions by a player in his first four seasons since 1970. That got him a free agent contract for the 2022 season with the Chargers, but he wore out his welcome there earlier this season and has had just one interception since. Jackson was part of the 2018 Patriots Super Bowl championship team.

He’s played 77 regular season games, starting 52 with 201 total tackles, his 26 picks, 64 passes defensed, one forced fumble and three fumble recoveries.

He started the Chargers’ first two games and then had six starts in eight games with the Pariots this past season.
