Rivier Hoop Roundup: Monks rule the Muldoon in sweep

NASHUA — The Monks of Saint Joseph’s (Me.) turned the Muldoon Center into their own monastery on Tuesday night, with wins over the Rivier University men’s and women’s basketball teams:

MEN’S BASKETBALL

ST.JOSEPH’S 85, RIVIER 75

The game was back and forth throughout the first half, with the team finally drawing even at 39 all just before the break. The Monks (9-9, 5-5 GNAC) hit a few more shots to give them a 47-42 lead going into the break. The Raiders (2-19, 0-13 GNAC) couldn’t close the gap in the second, which allowed St. Joe’s to extend their lead to 10, which would be the final margin. It’s Riv’s 15th straight loss.

The Monks had six score double digits, with Griffin Foley leading the way with a team-high 19 points. Ashtyn Abbott picked up a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Julian Llopiz contributed 13 points, with John Frazier and Teagan Hynes adding another ten points each.

The Raiders had strong performances from Nikolas Pignone, Goffstown’s Robenson Baguidy and Nesta Roberts. Pignone led the team with 19 points and five rebounds. Baguidy had one of his best scoring games this season with 18 points and five steals. Roberts finished with a double-double of 15 points and ten rebounds.

Rivier will be back Thursday when it travels to Lasell University for another GNAC matchup at 7:30 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

ST. JOSEPH’S 84, RIVIER 53

Rivier (10-11, 7-6 GNAC) struggled from behind the three-point line tonight, making four of 22 shots. Manchester’s Lyric Grumblatt led the Raiders with 19 points, three rebounds, and four steals. Nashua’s Hannah Muchemore contributed with nine points, four assists, and four steals.

The Monks’ offense was powered by Elisabeth Stapelfeld and Hannah Talon who each put up 20 points. SJC’s Angelica Hurley scored 15 points and Hailey Anderson did not miss tonight earning 11 points. Saint Joe’s (14-4, 9-1 GNAC) had a free throw shooting percentage of 88.2%, only missing two shots from the line.

Rivier, which travels to face Lasell at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, was badly beaten on the boards, outrebounded 40-21.
