Martinez hits for 20 as UNH tops UBMC, 68-62, at Lundholm

DURHAM – Senior forward Jayden Martinez (Cibolo, Texas) scored a game-high 20 points to lead the University of New Hampshire men’s basketball team to Monday afternoon’s 68-62 win against UBMC at Lundholm Gym.

Sophomore point guard Blondeau Tchoukuiegno (Montreal, Quebec) finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Senior forward Nick Guadarrama (Newington, Conn.) matched Tchoukuiegno’s game-high nine rebounds and scored eight points. Sophomore guards Nick Johnson (Bronx, N.Y.) and Marco Foster (Chicago, Ill.) both netted 10 points; Johnson also had two blocks and Foster had two steals.

UMBC was led by Darnell Rogers (18 points), L.J. Owens (14) and Keondre Kennedy (12).

UNH improves to 12-10 overall, 9-2 at home and 7-6 in America East. UMBC is not 12-12 overall and 7-6 in the conference.

New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday at 7 p.m. against the University of Vermont.

There was a total of nine lead changes and six tie scores in the game.

UMBC scored the first points of the game and held a trio of 3-point leads before the Wildcats took their first lead of the game, 11-9, when Martinez hit a 3-pointer at 15:09.

The score was deadlocked at 11 and 13 before UNH went on a 14-2 run to build a double-digit lead, 27-15, at 9:49. The surge was fueled by Foster’s five points.

Rogers made one of his four first-half 3-pointers and Kennedy followed with a turnaround jumper to lift UMBC within 27-20 at 8:14.

Tchoukuiegno’s 3-pointer ignited a 7-1 spurt that gave UNH its largest lead of the game, 34-21, at 6:25.

The Retrievers outscored New Hampshire 15-1 the rest of the half to take a 36-35 lead into the locker room.

Martinez and Johnson made back-to-back 3-pointers early in the second half to put the Wildcats back in front, 41-38, at 18:51.

There were six lead changes and two tie scores in the next nine minutes to advance the score to 49-49.

Martinez’s putback gave UNH a 51-49 lead at 8:55 and began a 7-0 run that continued with his 3-ball at 8:18 and Foster’s fastbreak layup at 7:56 to give the ‘Cats a 56-49 lead.

Martinez made one free throw to reestablish a double-digit lead, 63-53, with 5:48 remaining.

A 3-pointer by Tchoukuiegno made it 66-53 at 3:55, but Rogers made back-to-back driving layups and Owens hit a 3-pointer to lift UMBC within 67-62 at 1:26.

Guadarrama tacked on a foul shot with 29 seconds to close the scoring as the Retrievers missed a pair of 3-point attempts the rest of the way.

UNH shot 50 percent (15-30) from the floor in the first half and finished at 44.8 percent (26-58); that included 45.5 percent (10-22) on 3-pointers. UMBC shot 36.8 percent (21-57) with seven 3’s on 22 attempts (31.8%).

New Hampshire finished with a 38-33 rebounding advantage and outscored the Retrievers 26-20 in the paint.
