Rivier Roundup: Volleyball, field hockey teams post wins

The Rivier women’s volleyball team took down two conference opponents Saturday afternoon’s tri-match in New London against host Colby-Sawyer and Anna Maria College, taking both 3-0 to stay unbeaten in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference at 10-0 (13-5 overall).

The wins highlighted a busy day for Rivier teams; field hockey also won while men’s soccer fell, both at St. Joseph’s (Conn.)

In the 25-20, 25-22, 25-15 volleyball sweep of Colby Sawyer, the Raiders played nearly a perfect match offensively, with just five total errors committed through all three sets. The Chargers struggled to find their stride and gave Riv 23 points on attack errors alone.

For the Raiders, Sydney Racevicius (Woodbury, Conn.) led the offense with 14 kills to go along with ten digs. Avery Pollard (Ballston, Lake, NY) finished the game with a match high 29 assists with an additional three kills, three digs, and one block. Defensively Sofia Pawlusik (Burt Hills, NY) continues to rack up the digs, finishing game one with 15.

Sam Mohammed and Shaelyn Thorton led Colby-Sawyer’s offensive effort, with both compiling 11 kills each. Anna Allen had the team high in assists with 17.

Rivier dominated the match vs. Anna Maria to the tune of 25-14, 25-13, 25-16 with Cadia Greene (North Kingstown, R.I.) leading the way with ten kills, four service aces, and 13 digs. Setter Anna Campbell of Nashua had a match high 24 assists along with two kills and three digs.

Rivier visits Johnson&Wales on Wednesday.

FIELD HOCKEY

RIVIER 4, ST. JOSEPH’S 0

The Raiders (4-3 GNAC, 5-6 overall) took control of the game in West Hartford, Conn. from two minutes in and never looked back. They put together a goal in every quarter of the contest by four different student-athletes.

The first half was started off by Jacklyn O’Connor (Westford, Mass.) and ended with another goal from Londonderry’s Hunter Langley ).

The second half for the Raiders was powered by Maegan Sheehy (Sabattus, Maine) and Grace Pierce (Barre, Vt).

The Raiders are at Albertus Magnus on Monday.

MEN’S SOCCER

ST. JOSEPH’S 2, RIVIER 0

USJ broke a 0-0 tie in the 33rd minute of the contest in West Hartford to go up 1-0 before the half. Elijah Rowland found the back of the net for the second time this season.

The Blue Jays would tack on one more to end all scoring in the game at 71:02 after Charles Mputu beat the Raider keeper.

Dominic Cunha (Peabody, MA) was in net this afternoon for Rivier. He saw nine shots on net, saving seven.

Riv 3-10, 1-8 GNAC) hosts Norwich Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
