Raider women’s volleyball, field hockey teams fall

NASHUA — Tuesday was another tough day for Rivier University women’s fall sports teams.

First, the Raider women’s volleyball team dropped a match this evening to non-conference opponent Emerson College 3-1 with Set scores of 23-25, 25-17, 18-25, and 20-25.

The Raiders dropped a close first set 25-23 but were able to tie it up 1-1 with a second set victory. Lily Sills (Carlisle, MA) continues to show her dominance as a freshmen middle hitter with another 13 kills on the day. Through six matches, she has accumulated 65 kills with a .352 percentage.

Raider Avery Pollard (Ballston Lake, NY) also had a solid match with 27 assists, four kills, and ten digs.

The Lions were however able to stave off the Raiders for the remainder of the match, winning the next two sets. Logan Steenbergen had a game high 14 kills along with seven digs and three service aces. Carolyn Vaimoso was just behind her with 12 kills of her own and six digs.

The Rivier women’s volleyball team will be back in action Saturday during their conference opener tri-match against Simmons University and the University of Saint Joseph’s. Action will begin at 10 a.m. with Simmons and USJ at 2 p.m.

RIV FIELD HOCKEY FALLS

The visiting Raiders fell in a close match this afternoon to non-conference opponent Westfield State 2-1.

The Raiders got on the board first just 11:45 into the contest when Hunter Langley (Londonderry, NH) received a cross from Maegan Sheehy (Sabattus, ME) off a breakaway.

The Owls would tie it up 1-1 in the second quarter just 12 minutes later on a Kelsi McDevitt goal.

The game would remain tied until Westfield was finally able to beet the Rivier keeper in the 56th minute of the game to get the final of 2-1. Cheryl Latona scored the game winner for the Owls.

Katie Olsen (Saugus, MA) suffered her third loss in net but played an incredible game for Riv. She saw 15 shots on goal and was able to save 13 of them.

Riv will be back in action this Saturday for its home opener at Joanne Merrill Field vs. GNAC opponent Johnson & Wales at 4 p.m.
