UNH Roundup: Women’s hoop, hockey seasons end

ALBANY, N.Y. — The University of New Hampshire’s first season under head coach and Nashua North/UNH alum Kelsey Hogan has come to an end.

The ‘Cats fell 49-43 in the America East quarterfinals on Sunday, ending their season at 5-16 overall.

Adara Gorman led UNH with 13 points while Hudson’s Amanda Torres added 10

Down 6-0, UAlbany responded with 15-straight points over the final 8:18 of the first quarter and took a 15-6 lead. Kyara Frames led the Great Danes’ charge with a team-leading eight points and three rebounds.

UAlbany scored the only four points in the final 3:58 of the second quarter and took a 25-12 lead into halftime. The Great Danes shot 34.5 percent and out-rebounded New Hampshire 20-11 and 8-1 in offensive rebounds.

The Wildcats began the third quarter on a 10-2 run that cut the UAlbany lead to 27-22 with 5:19 remaining. In a back-and-forth remainder of the quarter, New Hampshire was able to decrease the UAlbany lead to four, as the Great Danes led 33-29 after three quarters.

At 3:19 remaining, New Hampshire pulled to within one point, 36-35, behind six combined points from four different players. Lucia Decortes responded with a layup before New Hampshire’s Amanda Torres had a layup of her own and UAlbany led 38-37 with 2:18 remaining.

Ellen Hahne and Helene Haegerstrand made back-to-back three-point shots for UAlbany, around a layup from Torres, that gave the Great Danes a 44-39 lead with 1:12 left in the game.

UNH WOMEN’S HOCKEY SEASON ENDS

The second-ranked Northeastern University women’s ice hockey team scored five second-period goals in Sunday night’s 7-0 victory against the University of New Hampshire in the quarterfinal round of the 2021 Hockey East Championship at Matthews Arena.

UNH starting goaltender Ava Boutilier made 21 saves and exited with the Wildcats trailing 5-1 at 13:17 of the second period. Nikki Harnett (Plymouth, Minn.) stopped 18 of 20 shots on goal the final 26:43.

NU’s Aerin Frankel made 21 saves for her ninth shutout of the season – first against New Hampshire in five games. The Huskies had seven different goal scorers and Andrea Renner led the team with three points, all on assists.

Eighth-seeded UNH ends the season at 7-14-1 overall.

Top-seeded NU extended its winning streak to 14 games and unbeaten streak to 18 games (17-0-1) to improve to 18-1-1 and advance to the March 3 semifinals.

UNH WOMEN’S SOCCER BLANKS URI

Sophomore midfielder Whitney Wiley (Vienna, Va.) and senior forward Francesca Picicci (North Massapequa, N.Y) both recorded a goal to lift the University of New Hampshire women’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory against the University of Rhode Island at Wildcat Stadium.

This marks the second consecutive game in which both Wiley and and Picicci scored goals. Freshman forward Emily Bini was credited with an assist on the goal by Picicci.

UNH junior goalkeeper Cat Sheppard (Nasconset, N.Y) was credited with the win. The reigning America East Defensive Player of the Week recorded two saves and allowed zero goals in 90 minutes for her second shuout of the season and seventh career.

UCONN WOMEN ROUTS WILDCATS LACROSSE

The University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team scored the first 12 goals of the game en route to a 19-3 victory against the University of New Hampshire in Sunday afternoon’s non-conference game at Morrone Stadium.

Senior Sabrina Grovom (San Marcos, Calif.) scored two goals and sophomore Izzy Holmes (Seattle, Wash.) netted UNH’s other tally. Junior goalie Issy Torres (Elmhurst, Ill.) was credited with 10 saves.
