UNH Roundup: Hudson’s Torres earns All-Conference honors

DURHAM — Senior guard Amanda Torres of Hudson was named to the America East All-Conference Second Team highlighting five awards for the University of New Hampshire women’s basketball team, which were announced by the conference office on Friday.

Torres was also named to the America East All-Defensive Team for the second consecutive season for the Wildcats.

She led the team with 12.2 points per game, which ranked seventh among America East players and her 2.6 assists ranked eighth in the AEC. Torres also ranked second among conference players with 2.2 steals and 36.8 minutes per game.

In league play, Torres ranked seven among America East players with 12.0 points per game and her 2.1 steals per contest were fourth among conference players. Torres was named America East Player of the Week on December 7. Torres reached double figures in points in 14 of 19 games for the Wildcats and notched two steals in 14 contests.

Junior forward Ivy Gogolin (Hopkinton, Mass.) was named to the America East All-Conference Third Team and was also honored on the America East All-Academic Team. Gogolin ranked eighth in the conference in scoring at 11.6 points per outing, while her 5.7 rebounds per game ranked 14th in the conference.

Freshman guard Adara Groman (Hopkinton, Mass.) took home America East All-Rookie Team honors in her first season in Durham.

The Wildcats return to action on Sunday as the No. 5 seed in the upcoming 2021 America East Women’s Basketball Playoffs at No. 4 UAlbany. Game time is 5 p.m. from SEFCU Arena on ESPN+.

UNH MEN’S SOCCER EDGES UMASS-LOWELL

Sophomore midfielder Rory O’Driscoll scored the overtime game-winning goal in Friday afternoon’s season opener to give the University of New Hampshire men’s soccer team a 2-1 victory over UMass Lowell at the Cushing Field Complex in America East action.

Senior back Victor Menudier (Limoges, France) also scored his first UNH goal today. O’Driscoll assisted on Menudier’s goal to total three points on the day. Graduate student goalkeeper Alejandro Robles (Monterey, Mexico) made three saves to earn the win.

AMHERST’S CRANNEY HELPS UNH WOMEN’S LAX WIN

Amherst’s Abby Cranney had two goals in the Wildcats’ 20-9 win over Merrimack in their season opener.

Sophomore Liv Dunn (Newbury, Mass.) recorded six points and senior Julia Neyland (Boxborough, Mass.) tallied five points to lead the Wildcats.

Senior Sabrina Grovom (San Marcos, Calif.), freshman Olivia O’Connor (Hopkinton, Mass.), junior Delaney Pratt (Lafayette, Colo.), and sophomore Ava Schroeder (Niskayuna, N.Y.) each scored two goals.

UNH FIELD HOCKEY WINS

Sophomore Ava Mariani (Easton, Pa.), junior Finn Caron (Hampton, N.H.) and senior Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) scored goals three minutes apart to lift the Wildcats field hockey team to Friday afternoon’s 3-1 victory against the University of Massachusetts at Memorial Field.

UNH GYMNASTS FINISH SECOND

Junior Hailey Lui (Collegeville, Pa.) scored a 9.875 to take first place on balance beam, and sophomore Robyn Kelley (Wakefield, Mass.) won the floor exercise with a 9.875 to lead the UNH gymnastics team to a 195.300 and second-place finish in Friday night’s LIU tri-meet at the Pratt Recreation Center.

Towson scored a 196.150 for the victory, and host Long Island placed third with a 190.450. These three schools will join Pitt for a quad meet Sunday, Feb. 28 (4 p.m.) right back at Pratt Recreation Center.
