Hogan’s Wildcats get tamed by UMass, 74-55

By UNH Athletic Communications - | Dec 11, 2020

DURHAM – Freshman Adara Groman (Hopkinton, Mass.) led the Wildcats with a career-best 16 points as she went 4-of-5 from 3-point range but the University of New Hampshire women’s basketball team fell to UMass on Thursday night, 74-55, at Lundholm Gymnasium.

The Wildcats are now 1-4 overall, while the Minutewomen improve to 4-1 overall.

UMass was led by Sydney Taylor and Sam Breen who each posted 17 points. Senior captain Amanda Torres of Hudson also scored 10 points for the Wildcats. UMass grabbed 48 rebounds and shot 46.9 percent from the field, while the Wildcats also posted 24 rebounds and shot 39.6 percent.

The Minutewomen went on a 6-0 run to end the quarter with a 21-12 advantage.

UMass then outscored the Wildcats by a 27-14 margin to go to the half with a 48-26 lead.

“Second half, we adjusted, especially defensively. I feel like that’s been the story of us, these last five games,” UNH coach Kelsey Hogan said. “Proud of our young ladies, they showed fight to the end.”

Hogan was also impressed with Groman.

“She doesn’t play like a freshman,” Hogan said. “She’s a gamer. You saw it again today, too, just hitting big shots…I think she’s going to continue to improve, especially with her confidence, she’s going to flourish.”

That’s what the Wildcats hope to do as a team when they return from a two-week break. They are scheduled to take the floor Sunday and Monday, Dec. 27-28, vs. Hartford in a pair of 1 p.m. games.
