Silver Knights drop season opener

By Staff | Jun 9, 2013

p>BROCKTON, Mass. – It’s been a tough couple of days for the Nashua Silver Knights.

Not only did they have their home season opener rained out on Friday, the Knights had to begin the 2013 campaign on the road against the Brockton Rox on Saturday night and dropped a 9-6 decision at Campanelli Stadium.

The Rox got a tie-breaking three-run homer in the sixth inning by Rob McCunney off Knights reliever Geoff Fisher (Londonderry, UMass-Lowell) to provide the margin of difference.

Nashua starter Chris Good lasted just three-plus innings, giving up five runs (three earned). Brockton reliever John Sheehan picked up the win with 3.2 innings of one-run relief.

The Silver Knights were led offensively by Matt Sanchez, who had a two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Sean Lyons had a gap triple as well. The Knights loaded the bases in the ninth but Rox reliever Cole Barlow fanned Manny Cabral to end the game.

This was Brockton’s first win over Nashua ever in the FCBL. The Silver Knights won all five regular season games between the two as well as the two semifinal playoff games in 2012.

Nashua is off on Sunday and will travel to face Pittsfield (Mass.) in a special 10:30 a.m. game on Monday. The Silver Knights play a night game at Old Orchard on Tuesday before opening up the home season with a special 11 a.m. Education Day game Wednesday at Holman Stadium against the Wachusett Dirt Dogs.
