MANCHESTER – It was all in the family.

There were a couple of times that Keith Jones just wasn’t a football coach but a proud father on Friday night during TeamWest’s 24-0 win in the 12th annual CHaD East-West All-Star High School Football Game at Saint Anselm’s Grappone Stadium.

One was in the strictest sense of the word, when his son, Harris Jones, scooped up a fumble and raced 32 yards to the end zone nearly five minutes into the contest. The second was when one of his former players from the Milford High School team he retired from as coach, Cade Cloutier, had his own scoop and score of 28 yards with 11:06 remaining in the one-sided contest.

“Of course, a proud father moment, and also a proud father moment when Cloutier scored,” Jones said. “Can’t complain. They’re all my kids.”

Of course it was poetic when Harris Jones scored, because he benefited from the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth when he was much younger and needed several surgeries after an accident. He was part of the ceremonial coin toss at the inaugural CHaD Game in 2012 as a six-year-old.

And now, as a graduated senior, the former Milford standout was a key component in a game he always dreamed of playing. Jones scooped up East QB Ryan Aubin’s fumble caused by former rival and now teammate, Souhegan standout J.J. Bright, and ran to paydirt.

It was the West’s second score in a two minute span early in the game, as a blocked punt set up a 3-yard TD run by Player of the Game Kyle Ashley of Newport with 12:26 left in the first quarter.

“J.J.came up, made a big hit, saw the ball on the ground and I just picked it up and ran with it,” Jones said. “There wasn’t much to it. I was kind of in shock to be honest.”

“It was fantastic to be able to play with these guys, and do it for a good cause as well,” Bright said. “I saw that (Aubin) was sneaking, running to the outside. Our (defensive) linemen did a great job forcing him to me, it made it easy for me to make the hit, and Harris just picked it up and ran. Definitely the highlight of my night.”

The 14-0 lead lasted until the West’s Davis Glodgett of Keene booted a 19-yard field goal with 39 seconds left in the third quarter, and Cloutier’s TD return off a botched punt attempt came with 11:06 left to finish the scoring. The West has now won four straight and has a 9-3 overall lead in the series.

“It was crazy how all of us came together,” Cloutier said. “You saw it during the game. We had better chemistry than East, that’s what won the game for us. … I looked down and saw an apple, and picked it up and took it to the end zone, no better feeling than that.”

“The mental mistakes in certain areas is what wins this game,” Keith Jones said, noting the team worked hard on special teams this past week. “We can’t have those mistakes. We did a great job capitalizing on anything that we could. We won the turnover battle. Some kids stepped up and made some great plays at great times, what else can you say?”

You can say how the West also won the line of scrimmage, as told by the rushing stats, 187 net rushing to just a measly 29 by the East, which didn’t cross the 50 yard-line in the second half until its final possession.

“The offensive line did a great job and didn’t make mistakes,” Jones said, “and the defensive line controlled the game, they were awesome.”

As was Newport’s Ashley, who had 10 total tackles and 2.5 sacks.

“He was impressive everywhere,” Keith Jones said. “I’m so happy he was named Player of the Game.”

Meanwhile, there was a lot of happiness to go around, as it will be a nice weekend in the Jones household. Harris moves on to Plymouth State, and Keith leaves Milford entirely to take a position at Merrimack High School.

And Harris Jones has yet another CHaD memory, this final one as special as the first 12 years ago.

“I had a blast out here all week,” he said. “Played with a good group of guys, made some new friends, a lot of fun. … Best opportunity I could have had. Electric.”
