They knew they’d likely see each other again in the Divison I state tournament, and tonight that indeed is the case.

The No. 5, 17-3 Bishop Guertin High School girls basketball team will take on the top seeded, 18-1 Pinkerton Academy Astros in the Division I semifinals at 8 p.m. at Exeter High School.

In the first meeting, the Cards had a 13 point lead early in the third quarter but went suddenly cold from the floor as the Astros pulled away down the stretch for a 74-66 win.

The winner will take on the winner of No. 2 Bedford vs. No. 3 Portsmouth, who play at 6 p.m. today, also at Exeter, in Sunday’s finals at UNH.

Guertin has beaten Manchester Memorial and Londonderry at home in the first two rounds, led by Brooke Paquette and Olivia Murray, among others.

“It’s playoff basketball,” Cards coach Brad Kreick said. “We’ve done exactly what we’ve needed to do to win. I’m not really into grading at this point, I’m into winning.”

SOUHEGAN BOYS IN SEMIS REMATCH

In another rematch, the 18-1 Souhegan boys hoop team, the top seed in Division II, takes on the only team it lost to, No. 4 Lebanon (17-3) tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Oyster Rivier High School.

The Sabers fell to Lebanon last month in Amherst by 16, but the Raiders took a seven point game and pulled away down the stretch. It’s Souhegan’s first trip to the semis since it made the Division II finals in 2013.

CAMPBELL BOYS SEEDED FOURTH

In Divison III boys basketball, the Campbell Cougars (14-3) will begin their quest for a title tonight at 7 as the No. 4 seed, hosting No. 13 Belmont (8-10) in the preliminary round. Campbell beat Belmont 47-39 at Belmont on Dec. 20.

If they win, the Cougars will host the winner of the White Mountains-Conant prelim in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. on Friday.

In Monday’s and late weekend action:

BOYS HOCKEY

BISHOP GUERTIN 2,

MALDEN CATHOLIC 0

Cards goalie P.J. Benites spun a shutout as Guertin improved to 5-6-1, getting two third period goals by John Mantone and Brian Jenkins. Sam Clauson added an assist on Manton’s goal.

Guertin will look to get to the .500 mark at Windham on Wednesday.

MERRIMACK’S HORTON

Merrimack’s Sylvia Horton edged Bishop Guertin’s Caroline Butler, 36.050-36.025 to capture the top All-Around title in this past weekend’s State Meet in Salem.
