HS Roundup: Spartan wrestlers win; Cougars lose two on hardwood

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Jan 26, 2022

Remember when Tuesdays used to be chock full of games, mainly basketball, in the winter?

Not with the new schedule that has teams mainly playing three games a week. There were only two basketball games last night, both tough ones for Campbell, and there were two wrestling matches — North vs. South, and Milford vs. Alvirne. That used to be unheard of for that sport on Tuesday.

Here are the results of one of the lightest nights of the winter season:

WRESTLING

MILFORD 42,

ALVIRNE 18

The Spartans continued their good season by cruising past the Broncos as Hunter Kolesar, Matt Ebert, Ethan O’Connor, Noah Kittredge and Nate Post all recorded pins.

PELHAM 22,

CAMPBELL 18

All of the Cougar points came via forfeit while the Pythons recorded two actual wins, one by pin and one a major 16-7 decision over hard-fighting wrestler Connor Rakiey at 145.

BOYS BASKETBALL

HOPKINTON 56,

CAMPBELL 54 (OT)

The Cougars lost an overtime thriller despite 18 points from Jack Noury and 10 from Austin McHugh.

Colton Martel added eight points for the Cougars (6-3), who host Raymond tonight at 7.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

HOPKINTON 45,

CAMPBELL 17

After a tight first half, the visiting Hawks proved too much for the Cougars in the final two periods.

Bailey Bourque led Campbell with seven points while junior guard Evelyn Page added four. Junior guards Alyvia Ashe and Kristina Castellano played well defensively and rebounded well.

Now 1-7, Campbell visits Conant on Friday.
