Cavs suffer extreme one-sided loss at hands of Lebanon

By Greg Fennell - Valley News Staff Writer | Sep 11, 2021

LEBANON — The schedule maker gifted Lebanon High with dessert to open its NHIAA Division II season. Now comes the main course.

The Raiders followed last week’s 60-14 rout of Manchester West with a 77-28 pasting of overmatched Hollis-Brookline on Friday night at Henry Emerton Memorial Field. Cole Shambo scored four touchdowns and Jackson Stone added three for Lebanon (2-0), which expects much stiffer competition in a visit to unbeaten Milford on Friday night.

The evening left Lebanon coach Chris Childs in a no-win situation. The Cavaliers’ young, inexperienced varsity was no match for the Raiders’ strength and speed, as Lebanon’s 42-0 lead after one quarter confirmed. The visitors’ points all came against the Raider junior varsity, forcing Childs to occasionally return to his starters to keep things in running time.

CJ Childs got Lebanon on the board after just 84 seconds, blocking a Joe Mahoney punt and returning the football 33 yards for the touchdown. A Shambo interception set up a 26-yard Nyeoti Punni TD dash. Stone scored from 2 and 32 yards. Shambo returned another tipped Mahoney punt 12 yards for points and closed the first quarter with a 48-yard scoring gallop.

HB QB Riley McQuilkin had no time to operate against Lebanon’s varsity defense. He fared better against the jayvees, connecting on second-quarter TD tosses to Brady Laub (nine yards) and Colby MacDormand (22). Tucker Luter’s 15-yard return of a blocked punt for a score brought back Lebanon’s varsity, and Shambo bolted for another 48-yard TD and a 58-20 halftime cushion.

The Raiders’ three second-half scores all came from defense or special teams. Shambo returned the opening kickoff untouched 67 yards, Justin DeCarlo delivered a McQuilkin pickoff 53 yards for points and Ethan Price repeated the feat on a 94-yard pick-six late.

McQuilkin linked with Mahoney from 35 yards for the Cavs’ other TD.

Shambo finished with four carries for 102 rushing yards for Lebanon.

After two weeks of dieting on sweets, Childs expects the menu to be largely meat and potatoes against Milford. It took all of 10 seconds after Friday’s handshakes for the Lebanon coach to remind his charges things will get much chewier from here on out.

“Our kids are going to have to play 48 minutes next week,” Childs said, “for sure.”
