NASHUA – The Bishop Guertin High School boys lacrosse speed train keeps on rolling.

The Cardinals had no problem with Bedford on Tuesday night, winning 16-6, thanks to outscoring the otherwise game Bulldogs 7-1 in the third quarter.

Let’s face it, the Cardinals are running out of challengers. They have beaten chief rival Pinkerton twice, then Exeter, and while the Bulldogs are at a high level, they came into Stellos at 9-2 and left with looking to see how they can mount a challenge in Thursday night’s rematch.

“We played a flat first quarter 4-2, and then 7-1 in the second quarter which was more like ourselves,” Cards coach Chris Cameron said. “We’re very good in transition. It’s the settled offense where we’ve got to get better. At some point it is who you are, which is starting to worry me.”

But don’t be fooled, the 10-0 Cards still can muster plenty of offense, as shown by the fact freshman Brady Dumont had six goals to lead the way last night. There were hat tricks for John Krikorian (a highlight reel goal in the second half) and Declan Wilkie.

But it’s true, the Cards were up just 4-2 after one, thanks in part to a man-up goal by Bedford’s Max Manniello (two on the night) just before period’s end.

But then the Cards took off with seven straight tallies. Game over, up 11-2 at the half and 15-5 after three.

However, Cameron wants more from the team’s offensive sets.

“When Dawson Clark (two goals last night) plays, it’s not a problem,” Cameron said. “But when he’s out, we struggle six on six offense. We have to get better.

“The amount of faceoffs we win, and how hard we ride, we had the ball for a long period of time. We’re not making teams pay for that. But in transition, we’re great.”

William Kramer also had a pair for Bedford, which will host the Cards on Thursday at 7. The ‘Dogs have also lost to Pinkerton and Londonderry; there’s really no challengers left for BG in the regular season, at least.

“Bedford played well, they battled, they had a good game plan, their goalie (Matt Desmond) made saves,” Cameron said. “They packed it in defensively, played hard, and I give them credit.”

But that second quarter changed everything.

“We’re capable of playing in spurts,” Cameron said. “We have to play 48 minutes and string these quarters together.”

The scoring depth came through as Dumont continues to shine in his first year. He’s a shooter.

“When teams slide early, and they double, he’s a guy who can shoot it long, but he puts himself in the right spots,” Cameron said. “That’s what it is. Al those goals were catch-and-finishes, and you need a guy like that.

“You need a guy who can be a sniper, and he’s certainly given that to us.”

Just another engine in the lacrosse train known as Bishop Guertin.
