HS Roundup: South rules in city tennis; BG lax tops Exeter

t’s pretty clear that Nashua High School South rules in tennis when it comes to the city’s two public high schools.

The Panther swept Nashua North on Friday, the boys winning 9-0 with North not winning more than two games in any match, while the South girls won 7-2 with matches much closer.

In the day’s other big game, Bishop Guertin downed Exeter for the second time in a week in a battle of Division I boys lacrosse powers, 12-6 at Stellos Stadium.

Here’s the Friday rundown:

BOYS TENNIS

NASHUA SOUTH 9,

NASHUA NORTH 0

Santiago Somorrostro downed Stephen Norris at No. 1 singles and the Panthers went on from there to improve to 6-1.

Other South winners included Abhinav Avvaru (8-1), Akhil Kammila (8-2), Praneet Nadella (8-2) and Neil Kachappilly (8-0).

The Panthers got a forfeit at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles.

The South doubles teams of Somorrostro/Avvaru and Kaushik Tadipathri/Shubh Dubey both won 8-2.

HANOVER 6,

ALVIRNE 3

Peyton and Ashton Meuse remained unbeaten in singles and doubles, but those were the only wins the Broncos got in falling to 6-2.

Peyton won 8-3 at No. 1 and Ashton triumphed at No. 2 8-5, but the Broncos dropped the next four singles matches.

The Meuses won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. Tom Bondaruk and Charlie Thomas lost a close 9-7 decision at No. 2.

CONVAL 6,

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 3

The Cavs’ Will Pesiridis avenged a loss earlier this week with an 8-0 win, and Dan Kennedy almost did the same thing but fell short in a 9-8 (7-4) tiebreaker. Bryson Giersch won 8-1 at No. 3.

Pesiriedis/Giersch won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles while Kennedy and Rory Klauber lost in a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles, 9-8 (7-4) as HB fell to 3-6.

GIRLS TENNIS

NASHUA SOUTH 7,

NASHUA NORTH 2

The Panthers took five of six singles to improve to 6-2 in the battle of city rivals, beginning with Margaret Wagner’s close win over North’s Ashley Goh at No. 1 singles, 8-6.

South also got singles wins from Priva Shokeen at No. 2 (8-4), Abby Finchum at No. 3 (8-1), Krisha Dani at No.5 (8-6 over Caitlyn Mamos) and Jenna Lecklider at No. 6 (8-1).

Wagner/Shokeen and Finchum/Tsao triumphed in doubles by 8-5 margins.

The Titans two victories came at No. 3 singles with Sanya Rano edging Katrina Tsao 8-6, and Mamos and Ashley O’Young winning at No. 3 doubles.

LONDONDERRY 5,

MERRIMACK 4

The Tomahawks got their usual wins from Shu Grosso (8-0) at No. 1 singles and the team of Grosso/Sarah Hardy (8-1) at No. 1 doubles. But they only managed two other wins, by Emily Winefield (8-4) at No. 5 singles and Winefield/Sarah Zebuhr (8-4) at No. 3 doubles.

MILFORD 5,

MANCHESTER WEST 4

The Spartans got three singles wins and two in doubles to pull out the victory.

Singles winners were Grace Carpenter at No. 1 (8-0), Adrianna George at No. 2 (8-1) and Emma Grovesteen at No. 3 (8-3).

Carpenter/George teamed at No. 1 doubles for an 8-0 win while Grovesteen and Fallon Clegg got that key fifth point at No. 3 doubles, 8-6.

BOYS LACROSSE

BISHOP GUERTIN 12,

EXETER 6

It was a much closer contest than the 21-8 rout on the road on Monday for the Cardinals (8-0), but they got expanded on a 5-4 halftime lead with three third quarter goals in 68 seconds, starting with a tally by John Krikorian.

Other goal scorers for Guertin included Dawson Clark, Mike and Tim Kiely, John Sullivan, Chris Heitmiller, and Declan Wilkie.

Guertin hosts Concord today at 3 p.m. Exeter fell to 7-2.

GIRLS LACROSSE

ALVIRNE 11,

CONCORD CHRISTIAN 7

Zaira O’Leary had a great day in goal with 21 saves for the 2-3 Broncos, who got three goals and two assists from Hailey Rhamalinho.

Elsa Ferullo and Charlotte Malone eachhad two toals and an assist while Maddy Nicolosi had two goals, three assists, and four draw controls. Halle Miller had two goals, two assists and six draw controls.

BASEBALL

SOUHEGAN 9,

SANBORN 1

The mound trio of Colin Burke, Kyan Bagshaw and Wil Jaques kept the hosts in check while Nolan Colby and Bagshaw each had two hits, including a homer for Bolby and triple for Bagshaw. The Sabers (7-1) visit rival Hollis on Tuesday.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 16,

CONVAL 3

The Cavaliers moved to 6-0 as the bats were booming, led by Brand Hsu’s 2 for 4 day with a homer and Drew Gryniewicz going 4 for 4. Paul Vachon went 3 for 3 while Jack Lager had two hits and three RBIs.

MANCHESTER WEST 10,

MILFORD 0

The Spartans suffered their first loss (4-1), despite good relief pitching by Damian Philbrick.

Philbrick and Colin Williams both reached on hit by pitches, and Trice Cote and Philbrick had stolen bases for the Spartans. Cote got the start on the mound and took the loss, striking out three.

The Spartans are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Sanborn.

SOFTBALL

BISHOP GUERTIN 17,

ALVIRNE 9

The Cardinal bats came alive in the fourth as they scored five times after capitalizing on three consecutive walks to improve to 6-2. The offense was led by freshman Mack Bowen who went 3 for 3 with two singles and a double.

Katie Splaine started in the circle and was relieved by junior Meghan Davey after the third inning to pick up the win.

The Broncos fell to 4-4.

LONDONDERRY 13,

NASHUA SOUTH 0

It was a tough day for the Panthers, despite Lizzie DeRusha’s two hits and seven strikeouts by pitcher Natalie Ward over six innings.

The 6-3 Lancers got nine hits on the day as South (2-7) hosts Pinkerton on Monday.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 7,

CONVAL 1

The Cavs played errorless ball while pounding out nine hits. Austyn Krump had two dubles with two RBIs but also pitched seven innings with 14 strikouts, allowing only one run on two hits.

Emily Sartell had a double with two RBIs while Katie Carr had a hit with two RBIs and Savannah Duquette added a double.

Kailey Disco, Katrina Lee and Abigail Guy all had a hit while Disco and Lee each stole a base.
