HS Roundup: South’s Ward fans 19; Souhegan nine wins

Nashua High School South softball coach Kevin Handy has seen the progress in pitcher Natalie Ward all season.

And on Thursday, Ward took another huge step in her development by striking out a whopping 19 Manchester Central hitters as the Panthers snapped a four-game losing streak.

It was a busy Thursday. Another tough day for North and South baseball, but the Souhegan nine remained unbeaten with a win over Sanborn. There were plenty of good performances on the day, and here they are:

SOFTBALL

NASHUA SOUTH 4,

MANCHESTER CENTRAL 1

The Panthers (2-6) snap their four game losing streak with a win over the Little Green.

The Panthers scored a run off a Lexi Roberge single in the first inning. Lizzie DeRusha (three hits) and Audra Robinson each drove in a run in the fifth inning. Malia Martel also had multiple hits for South.

Ward scored the win allowing two hits and one run over seven innings., and her defense played errorless ball behind her.

South hosts Londonderry on Friday.

CAMPBELL 13,

PELHAM 7

Morgan Burner’s seven strikeouts helps the Cougars claw the Pythons. Chloe Steinger, Maddie Davis, Alexa Robert and Catherine Carignan each hit one over the fence.

Campbell hosts Manchester West on Monday.

MILFORD 12,

MANCHESTER WEST 0

The Spartans (3-2) shutout West in six innings on Thursday. Madi Herbert led the offense with three RBIs, a double and a triple.

Anna Philbrick (two doubles, RBI), Ali Fortin (RBI), Hannah Harrington (double, RBI), Steph Stillwagon (double, RBI) and Keelie Wells (RBI) played well at the plate. Herbert pitched all six innings allowing three hits and recorded eight strikeouts. Milford visits Sanborn on Monday.

BASEBALL

SOUHEGAN 9,

SANBORN 0

Dylan Dufour led Souhegan (6-1) on the mound and at the plate as the Sabers shut out Sanborn in Amherst.

Dufour made his first start of the season and was dominant throwing only 70 pitches allowing two hits, walking none and striking out 10 in six innings of work.

Wil Jaques came in and tossed a scoreless seventh to close out the shutout. Dufour also led the Sabers at the plate with two hits and two RBIs. Colin Burke and David Rieth also had two hits and drove in two.

Souhegan travels to Sanborn on Friday.

MANCHESTER CENTRAL 8,

NASHUA SOUTH 3

A tough 0-3 week ended for the Panthers with Central starter Thomas Mulholland no-hitting them for the first six innings at Holman Stadium. However, South, now 2-7, managed hits by Isaiah Hedquist, Adam Picard and Jake O’Connor.

The Panthers head to Pinkerton on Monday.

PINKERTON 7,

NASHUA NORTH 5

The Titans dropped their third straight, struggling against Pinkerton pitcher Tom Rioux, who struck out seven over five innings allowing only two earned runs.

The Titans (4-6) are back at it on Monday at Londonderry. The Astros are now 8-1.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 5,

CONVAL 0

The Cavaliers stay undefeated with a shutout win over ConVal. Brandon Hsu threw a one hit shutout striking out 18. Jack Lager, Hsu (double, two RBIs) and Paul Vachon (two RBIs) led the Cavs offense.

HB visits ConVal today.

BOYS LACROSSE

MILFORD 6,

CONVAL 4

Corey Girouard (two goals) and Charles Urda (two goals) lead the Spartans to their first win of the season. Drew Hodges collected 19 saves behind the defense of Matt Rolon, Owen Marble and Luca DeRosa.

Milford travels to Trinity on Monday.

PINKERTON 19,

NASHUA NORTH 2

The Titans (1-8) woes continued when they met up with the Astros on Thursday. Robert Cannaway and Trent Gerlowski were the goal scorers, Jack Peters picked up four ground balls and Devyn Lavoie made six saves.

North visits Londonderry on Tuesday.

BEDFORD 11,

MERRIMACK 2

The Tomahawks falter to a stout Bulldogs squad. Jake Trahan and Shea Goodwin had one goal each and Kyle Dunn added an assist. Goalie Alex Griffin made 10 saves. Merrimack hosts Bedford on Saturday.

GIRLS LACROSSE

LONDONDERRY 13,

NASHUA SOUTH 10

Olivia Johnson scored six goals for the second straight game vs. the Lancers, but the visiting Panthers (5-3) didn’t have enough to get by their hosts.

Kylie Dawe and Ella Benzekri had two goals each, while Soleil Dubois scored one. Kaitlyn West added two assists and Maya Rioux and Aryanna Murray played well defensively.

South (5-3) hosts Timberlane on Saturday.

PINKERTON 14,

NASHUA NORTH 8

The Titans (7-2) lose a tough bout with the Astros. Lily Brooks tallied four goals, Kiley O’Brien scored two goals and Olivia Watt and Ava Soucy had one apiece.

North hosts Londonderry on Monday.

PELHAM 13,

CAMPBELL 10

The Cougars fell to 1-4 after a close loss to the Pythons. Jose Oberto led the offense with four goals and an assist, while Brooke Stoncius added two goals in the loss.

Campbell hosts St. Thomas on Saturday.

GIRLS TENNIS

BISHOP GUERTIN 8,

ALVIRNE 1

The Cardinals corralled the Broncos on the road in their matchup on Thursday. Winning for BG were Katelyn Nichols (8-0), Hannah Gilbertson (8-0), Natalie Macsweeney (8-3), Laura Bucci (8-3) and Abbey Linskey (8-0). Doubles winners were the teams of Nichols/Gilbertson (8-0), Macsweeney/Bucci (8-5) and Alexa Pesiridis/Hailey Barker (8-3). Marissa Murphy (8-3) picked up the lone win for the Broncos.

BG visits Nashua North on May 17 and Alvirne hosts Merrimack on Monday.

NASHUA SOUTH 8,

LONDONDERRY 1

The Panthers (5-2) win their fifth straight match after beating the Lancers. Singles winners were Margaret Wagner (8-5), Priya Shokeen (8-0), Abby Finchum (8-5), Krisha Dani (8-1) and Jenna Lecklider (8-0).

The teams of Wagner/Shokeen (8-2), Finchum/Kat Tsao (8-4) and Dani/Lecklider (8-1) won in doubles in action. South hosts Nashua North on Friday.

MERRIMACK 6,

KEENE 3

The Tomahawks grab a win on the road Friday afternoon. Singles winners were Shu Grosso (8-0), Colette Hutchinson (8-5) and Jordan Zebuhr (8-0).

Doubles winners were Grosso/Sarah Hardy (8-0), Vitalia Brock/Hutchinson (8-2) and Sarah Zebuhr/Jordan Zebuhr (8-4). Merrimack hosts Londonderry on Friday.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

BISHOP GUERTIN 3,

GOFFSTOWN 2

The Cardinals (5-4) won by the scores 28-30, 25-17, 22-25, 25-23, 17-15. Erik Wizboski (23 assists, five kills, three aces) and DJ Omogrosso (17 kills, five aces, three blocks) played phenomenal for the locals. Jamie Horgos added six aces and seven kills and Trent Rider recorded nine kills.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 3,

KEENE 0

The Cavaliers move to 4-2 after winning their matchup 25-20, 25-21, 25-14. Max Marshall anchored the offense with 18 assists and seven aces. Aidan Norris (five kills, five digs, two aces), Jake Laborde (four kills, four digs, three aces), Matt Kelley (three kills, two blocks) and Jack Delaney (three digs, two kills, one ace) gave strong contributions for the locals.

HB travels to John Stark on Tuesday.
