Tourney Trail: Warriors reach Division III hockey semis

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Mar 7, 2021

The Hollis Brookline-Derryfield hockey team is in new territory — fun territory, for sure.

The Warriors bested Pembroke-Campbell 6-3 late Saturday night at Concord’s Everett Arena, and now will return to Everett Wednesday to face Kennett in the Division III semifinals at 8 p.m.

It will be HBD’s first semifinal appearance, and not bad for a team that just came off a two-week pandemic pause nearly two weeks ago.

Senior Captain Sal Vella got the Warriors on the board early in the first period with a power play goal, assisted by Cole Giersch and Paul Vachon. The Warriors took command in the second period with three goals, one each by Paul Vachon (Vella assist), Quinn Silvio (assisted by Cole Giersch and Aidan Rowe) and one from Giersch, (Colin Macdonald assist).

Goals by Quinn Silvio (Conor Sanborn assist) and freshman Kyle Sanborn (his first high school goal, assisted by Tyler Lautieri) helped seal the deal for the Warriors in the third period.

Also, Rylan Morgan stopped 11 shots in goal.

TODAY’S GAMES

While the bowling semis and finals take place at Merrimack Ten Pin at 9 a.m. today, there are three big girls basketball games.

The fun begins with the Campbell Cougars (9-2) hosting Prospect Mountain in the Division III quarterfinals/regional final at 2 p.m.

Then at 5 p.m., an all-Nashua Division I quarterfinal/Region Four Final pits Nashua North at unbeaten Bishop Guertin, and Hollis Brookline at Pelham in the Division II quarterfinals/Region Two finals.

The home teams both enjoyed double-digit wins over their guests. The Cards beat Nashua North 62-33 two weeks ago and Pelham topped HB 56-40 back on Feb. 5.

Today’s girls hoop winners will advance to their respective semifinals on Thursday: Division I will be at Sanborn Regional, Division II at Bedford, and Division III at Trinity of Manchester.
