Tourney Trail: Sabers fall at West; boys hockey starts today

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Mar 3, 2021

There are the highs and lows of high school tournament time, and one of the lows for a team is seeing its season end.

That happened to the Souhegan Sabers girls basketball team on Tuesday night, as Manchester West outsted the locals from the Division II tournament with a 41-32 win in Manchester in the Region Two play-in game.

The Sabers trailed 17-14 at halftime but struggled in the third quarter, falling behind 34-25 entering the final eight minutes.

Kate Canavan led Souhegan with nine points while Caitlin Cooper added eight and Abby Rose six.

Senior Hunter Stonebreaker also played well,

“She showed leadership and composure in her final game,” Sabers coach Mike Vetack said.

Souhegan ends at 3-5, while the Blue Knights (3-9) will go on to face Pelham Friday night in the prelims. Hollis Brookline hosts Milford in the region’s other prelim and the winners square off on Sunday.

West lost 57-37 earlier in the season to the Pythons.

TODAY’S GAMES

Today is a big boys hockey day for the tournament, as in Divison I Nashua South-Pelham will visit Bishop Guertin at 3:30 p.m. at Cyclones Arena in a prelim game, while Nashua North-Souhegan is at Keene at 6 p.m.

The winners tangle in the region final on Saturday (overall quarterfinals).

In Division II, Alvirne-Milford is at Merimack in a Region One prelim at 3 p.m. at Manchester’s West Side Arena. The winner goes to face top seed, unbeaten Manchester Memorial on Saturday night at 8 at JFK Coliseum.

Finally, tonight at 6 in Division III, Hollis Brookline-Derryfield will host Sanborn-Epping at Nashua’s Conway Arena at 6:10 p.m. in a Region Two prelim.

The winner faces Pembroke-Campbell on Saturday. The Warriors tied Sanborn-Epping 1-1 earlier this season.

Also, in Division III boys hoop, Campbell hosts Raymond in a prelim game, the winner facing either Prospect Mountain on the road (the Region Four top seed) or St. Thomas at home (No. 4) on Saturday in the Division III quarters.

SNEAK PEAK

In girls basketball, Campbell’s Thursday opponent in the Region Four semis (overall prelims) at 6 p.m. in Litchfield is now set. It will be St. Thomas, which last night beat Raymond 40-21.
